Covering an area around 50,000 sq.km, the Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest protected wildlife areas on the world. Situated in the South- Eastern part of Tanzania, Selous was first mentioned by the 19-century European explorers. The name Selous is in the memory of the naturalist, hunter and author Frederic Courteney Selous, who died fighting in World War 1 and was buried near where he fell in the reserve.

The reserve has a wide variety of wildlife and birdlife with different landscapes. Rufiji River is the main feature in the Selous Game Reserve, with its main tributaries twisting and turning across the flood plains as the river runs towards the Indian Ocean. Boat Safari on the river is a must as you may see Hippos, crocodiles, and other amazing wildlife coming to quench their thirst.
