A guide to planning your African safari

Planning an African safari is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. With so many countries, seasons, lodges and travel styles to consider, knowing where to begin is often the hardest part. We believe clarity at the start makes every later decision easier. Below are the questions we are most often asked by first-time and sometimes even seasoned safari travellers, answered from our perspective as planners.

  • When is the right time to go on safari?

There is no single best time. There is only what is best for you. When advising clients, we look first at priorities. Wildlife density, landscape, photography, comfort, budget and flexibility all influence timing. Different regions perform differently throughout the year. Some destinations are exceptional in green season, offering dramatic scenery and strong value. Others are at their best in dry months when wildlife congregates around water sources.

Rather than recommending a generic “best month”, we match season to objective. That alignment shapes the rest of the journey.

  • How do you choose the right destination?

We focus on the experience rather than the country. When planning, we ask what you want your safari to feel like. Do you want classic wildlife on open plains or varied ecosystems and diverse activities? Is this a first introduction to Africa, or a deeper return visit? We also consider who is travelling and at what pace. Couples, families and small groups require different structures. A well-designed safari is about balance and flow. It is rarely about including as many locations as possible.

  • What about lodge selection?

For us, accommodation is about suitability, not status. When considering lodges, we focus on location within the destination, access to wildlife areas, guiding quality, atmosphere, privacy and room configuration. A beautifully designed property is not enough if it does not support the overall experience.

Some lodges are ideal for couples seeking privacy and stillness. Others work better for families who need flexibility and space. Our role is to ensure the lodge enhances your safari rather than distracting from it.

  • How do you approach budget?

We encourage thinking in ranges rather than fixed figures at the outset. Safari costs vary according to season, duration, internal flights and level of exclusivity. It is entirely normal not to know your exact budget early on. Our responsibility is to explain where flexibility exists, where compromises affect the experience and where value genuinely lies. Budget discussions should feel transparent and practical, never uncomfortable.

  • What are the common mistakes to avoid?

We regularly guide travellers away from trying to see too much in one trip. Excessive movement can reduce the quality of the experience. We also advise against choosing lodges based on photographs alone, fixing dates without understanding seasonal differences or comparing safaris to city hotel stays. Most importantly, we encourage early conversation. Clarity at the beginning prevents compromise later.

  • What should the planning process be?

In our view, safari planning should feel calm, structured and collaborative. We begin with a no-obligation conversation rather than forms. As your ideas evolve, we introduce practical guidance and realistic options. Dreams are balanced with logistics. Expectations are aligned with what is achievable. If planning feels stressful or rushed, something is wrong. The experience should build confidence long before departure.

  • What is the first step?

If you are considering an African safari, whether you are at the very beginning or refining existing plans, a short conversation can bring immediate clarity. So let's start the safari conversation! No obligation. Just guidance and solid advice.
